Achoo

Yes, I am sick. I was wiped out last weekend - someone got me sick. I had to cancel plans and everything. Grrr. In class today, we learned a little about the Anasazi. Tomorrow will be about the Maya. Wednesday is going to have you complete a reading and questions about the Aztecs.

Mayan Math!

Woo Hoo! We looked at the Mayan Math system today. I assigned some homework due tomorrow: C9, D10, F17, H23, I28, I30, and Z5. You had 5 minutes in class. Do not forget about the Ch. 15 quiz handout and map - both to be corrected Monday.

Which One is Supposed to be Jesus?

Yesterday was all about becoming introduced to an episode of Star Trek - I explained how there was an "Old" series and a "New" series. When exploring the cultish following of Star Trek, I compared it a bit to Christianity - there are people who prefer Old Star Trek as a more pure form, while others prefer the Next Generation. Still others prefer one of the otehr series, while some only enjoy the movies. It's all confusing, especially for Emma M., who asked the question heading this entry. To answer: NONE of them. it's just a show.

In class today, you took a short quiz to gauge your video retention. Then you completed a handout and we came up with our own contextual language (Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, etc.). The lesson is about communication - you need to know not only the words and definitions, but also the CONTEXT in order to truly understand what is being conveyed. That is why it is just as imoprtant to learn about the culture of a people as well as their native language. So, when Fresco played music all the time, it was good for class - but harmful to us and our environment, which is why we moved downstairs.

Star Trek

We watched an episode of The Next Generation ("Darmok") yesterday. It's all about communication, language, and...cults. Below is the plan for the next few days:
Tuesday - Star Trek (Quiz, worksheet, discussion)
Homework - Ch. 15 Take-Home Quiz/Map (Due Monday for correction)
Wednesday - Mesoamerica Rdg/Wksht (In-Class)
Thursday - Mayan Math (Late Start)
Friday - Bering Land Bridge/Mayan Math
Monday - Correct Take-Home quiz and Mesoamerica Wksht
Tuesday - Video: Maya

I hope this helps.

Kind or Cruel?

We watched a vid about Machiavelli today. I am giving you the weekend off - so you can come back Monday ready to be Trekked.

KHAAANNNN!

The Star Trek video was MIA today. And since it's a 2-day activity/assessment, we'll have to wait until Monday. In class today, we watched a Simpsons episode about cults - which will lead to us exploring the question of man vs. moment. Does the man make the moment, or vice versa? Tomorrow, you need your book for "McHistory" during which we'll zoom through some things to prepare us for future lessons.

LearningCurve

I forgot to post earlier - sorry. Still remembering that I am running this blog. In class today, I showed you the Scientific Method and the importance of Galileo. Tomorrow will have us go over the charts that are due. I really hope everyone sees the connection between the four (Luther, Printing Press, Scientific Method, Heliocentric Theory). It is vital.
